Fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) of resid feestocks requires a better prediction of delta coke-the difference between the coke deposited on the FCC catalyst and the coke remaining after catalyst regeneration. Many people rely on feedstock Conradson carbon content alone to determine delta coke, but the relation between Conradson carbon and delta coke is not reliable for resid feeds. An advanced analysis of feedstock characteristics, coupled with a modified micro activity test (MAT), has been used to more accurately predict delta coke. A modified distillation procedure and a modified continuous pilot plant permit these advanced analyses. Results of the advanced analyses and procedures are expressed as the R2R index which correlates well with delta coke.
