Resid FCC is often limited by delta coke, enhanced amongst others by metals and conradson carbon residue (CCR) in the feed. Testing cyclic deactivated catalysts in a modified MAT test, named the Micro Simulation Test (MST) yields results which are representative for equilibrium catalyst quality. Using the MST test we can effectively screen and rank catalyst in terms of coke caused by cracking and/or metal dehydrogenation activity. It is possible to test with feedstocks up to 4-5% CCR feed in the MST unit, while it looks like pilot scale riser testwork up to above 10% CCR will be feasible with a proper feed injection system. Soft delta coke can also be important, therefore a stripping procedure to determine soft delta coke has been developed.
