Multinational enterprise: market-failure and market-power considerations

Journal Article · · Sloan Manage. Rev.; (United States)
The author develops a conceptual framework to examine the relative efficiency properties of multinational firms. He examines both vertical and horizontal foreign investment. The properties of multinational firms as technology transfer agents are assessed against the market alternatives. Market-failure and transactions-cost issues are central to the analysis. The author contrasts this approach with analyses that focus on monopoly-power considerations. He contends that the obsession with these considerations and the failure to focus on the internal technology transfer properties of the international firm have significant public policy implications. These considerations have deflected attention from some important social efficiencies afforded by foreign direct investment. 43 references.
