Improving sludge incineration and vacuum filtration with pulverized coal

Journal Article · · J. Water Pollut. Control Fed.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5152623
The research was aimed at improving the filtration and incineration characteristics of primary activated sludge by the addition of pulverized coal prior to the dewatering step. Various doses of coal were added to the sludge in the range of 0.1 to 0.4 kg coal/kg dry sludge solids. The results showed dramatic improvements in cake solids content and heat value of the dewatered sludge cake. At a coal dose of about 0.11 kg coal/kg dry sludge solids, the moisture content and the heat value of solids in the cake were balanced to permit autogenous combustion. The filter yield (corrected for chemicals and coal) was increased slightly at the coal dose required for autogenous combustion.
