This paper outlines the economic factors influencing the choice of railway motive power suggesting that the coal burning Rankine cycle locomotive is greatly more cost effective than current Diesel or Electric locomotives and their projected developments. Details of proposed thermodynamic cycles and their embodiment are given, together with estimates of overall performance. A discussion of the relative merits of various combustion systems is given. 7 refs.
