British Gas Corp.'s West Midlands Region points out similarities and differences between US and UK gas-distribution practices. In expanding gas service by attaching new residences and communities, British Gas strives to incorporate the most up-to-date procedures and materials. Although the national utility clearly lags behind US companies in the use of polyethylene pipe, significant strides will occur in this area during the next 5 years. Other differences in distribution-system practices lie in coordination of public-utility construction efforts to prevent damage to in-place mains as well as labor-compensation practices.
