Active silencer improves British Gas operations

British Gas Corp.'s Cambridge, UK, compressor station sometimes emits a residual noise or rumble at low frequencies even though the gas turbine is housed in a sound-deadening enclosure. To combat this problem, the UK's National Research Development Corp. is testing a large-scale active-silencing device that cancels out the unwanted sound by producing an exact but inverted replica of it. Four microphones pick up the noise, an electronic and computing apparatus processes the signal, and an audiopower equipment package (12 amplifiers and 72 loudspeakers) emits the opposite sound in three dimensions.
