ISO 9000 is an international standard that is being adopted in many countries around the world. As quality continues to increase in stature in every business, ISO 9000 will become commonplace among the majority of world-class companies. ISO 9000 will become the new elevated minimum standard of acceptable quality practice. The benefits go far beyond the quality of the end product. Improving the quality of internal functions and satisfying the internal customer lead to a more efficient operation which improves the profitability of the business. ISO 9000 is now being required primarily on an international basis. In the U.S., it is a marketing advantage at present and most likely will soon become a requirement more customers gain registration. Looking beyond customer requirements, ISO 9000 makes good sense from a total quality management viewpoint. It is a system that allows a business to more efficiently operate in a planning, rather than reactive, mode. This paper reports on ISO 9000 and its application to the petroleum and natural gas industries.
