Rhode Island recently officially opened the most technologically advanced Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) in the United States. The $5 million, 40,000-square-foot recycling plant has the ability to process 168 tons of newsprint and 210 tons of mixed recyclables a day. Rhode Island became the first state to mandate both residential and commercial recycling. With approximately one-third of the residential population on line, 550 tons of recyclable trash a week are being diverted from the State's Central Landfill to the MRF. The remainder of the state, including all commercial establishments, will be participating by the end of next year.
