A comparison of the utility taxes paid by public and private utilities show that public power systems pay proportionately more of their gross revenues to local and state governments than do investor-owned utilities (IOUs). During 1984, public utilities contributed 7.8% of their gross electric operating revenue, while IOUs paid 6.3% to state and local governments (and to the US government as excise tax). Public power systems do not pay federal income taxes, but neither do many private electric utilities which benefit from tax deferrals and tax credits. Comparisons are made on a regional basis. 1 table.
