Octane enhancement in FCC via ZSM-5

The use of the shape selective zeolite, ZSM-5, for octane enhancement of both FCC and TCC gasolines is described. Mobil's proprietary ZSM-5 has been evaluated in over 25 commercial cracking units. This paper discusses the twofold mechanism which explains how ZSM-5 works and presents in detail the results from the use of ZSM-5 in European and U.S. FCC operation. The value of ZSM-5 in catalytic cracking is assessed and its compatability with FCC operation resulting from its high thermal stability and metals resistance is demonstrated. Various processing schemes are discussed which show how to take maximum advantage when ZSM-5 is introduced into a cracking unit. These options are dependent upon the process equipment available and the local markets for petroleum products.
