The product channels of the N{sub 2}(A{sup 3}{Sigma}{sub u}{sup +}, v = 0-2) + O{sub 2} interaction have been examined by using a discharge-flow apparatus. N{sub 2}(A) was generated by energy transfer from Ar metastables and directly determined from Vegard-Kaplan emission. The branching ratios for N{sub 2}O and O{sub 2}(B{sup 3}{Sigma}{sub u}{sup {minus}}) formation have been determined to be <0.2% and <15%, respectively. These results firmly establish quenching of N{sub 2}(A{sup 3}{Sigma}{sub u}{sup +}, v {le} 2) by molecular oxygen to be a negligible source of atmospheric N{sub 2}O. The results for O({sup 3}P) production exceed the maximum possible branching ratio (two O atoms per N{sub 2}(A)) by a factor of 3. These results indicate that the Ar* + N{sub 2} interaction produces N{sub 2} metastable states, in addition to N{sub 2}(A), capable of dissociating O{sub 2}.
