American agriculture, the energy production system: gasohol

Journal Article · · Biosources Dig.; (United States)

In view of diminishing world reserves of non-renewable sources of energy the need for the development of renewable resources in terms of future energy policy is briefly outlined. The case for increased grain and sugar production as a possible source of feed and fuel energy is put forward. In 1978 despite the USDA's efforts to decrease starch and sugar production the surpluses available would have reduced gasoline consumption used in gasohol (10% alcohol, 90% gasoline). Considerable amounts of high protein food/feed would also have resulted. Benefits in terms of trade balances are also claimed. The author pleads for an energy policy that would allow for the preservation of fossilized energies for high quality chemical and technical uses.
