Coal pretreatment for two-stage liquefaction

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5142235
The objective of this research is to examine the effects of employing coal feedstock with altered maceral compositions on coal liquefaction results. The altered maceral compositions were to be achieved by employing near commercial concentration procedures, after achieving liberation via comminution. Because it was necessary to produce rather fine (<75 {mu}m) particulates to achieve acceptable liberation, liquid-liquid extraction was chosen as the separation process. This report presents the results of the liberation behavior of coal macerals during comminution and preliminary liquid-liquid extraction results. For the analysis of liberation, the size fractions from either crushing or grinding were subjected to the gravity fractionation. Then, the size-density fractions were analyzed for the petrographic composition to produce the size-composition matrices. 53 refs., 27 figs., 31 tabs.
