H dibaryon formation from. xi. /sup -/ atoms

We estimate the branching ratio R for the formation of the doubly strange H dibaryon, starting from various states of ..xi../sup -/p, ..xi../sup -/d, and ..xi../sup -/ /sup 4/He atoms. In the latter two cases, very sizable values of R>0.5 occur if the H mass is close to the ..lambda lambda.. threshold at 2.23 GeV/c/sup 2/.
