Xe/sub 2//sup +/ was produced as a bright green paramagnetic ion in the reduction of xenon(II) in antimony pentafluoride. The ion was characterized by its Raman, uv-visible, and ESR spectra. Monitoring the 287 nm band of XeF/sup +/ and the 335 nm band of Xe/sub 2//sup +/ showed evidence that the reaction of XeF/sup +/Sb/sub 2/F/sub 11//sup -/ with xenon gas at ambient temperature and pressure up to 500 Torr was completely reversible many times.
