Metallothionein in plasma and urine of cadmium workers

Journal Article · · Environ. Res.; (United States)
Metallothionein (MT) and ..beta..-2-microglobulin (BM) concentrations were determined in samples of plasma and urine from 31 workers in a Swedish factory manufacturing cadmium batteries. Concentrations of metallothionein in plasma varied from 2 to 11 ng/g and in urine from 2 to 155 ng/g. In workers with urinary BM concentrations above 500 ..mu..g/liter the median value of MT in urine was statistically significantly higher than that in workers with urinary BM concentrations lower than 500 ..mu..g/liter. In individual cases, however, a considerable increase in urinary BM may occur without any increase in urinary MT. The possible significance of increased MT concentrations in plasma, as seen in some of the workers in the present study, in relation to transport of Cd-MT to the renal cortex is pointed out.
