A listing of alternatives for SO/sub 2/ control of smelter emissions is presented. They include: 1) Conversion of sulfur oxides to sulfuric acid; 2) Capture of sulfur oxide from low-grade gas in some intermediate form and regeneration of the SO/sub 2/ in a more concentrated gas which would then be used to make acid or liquid SO/sub 2/; 3) Liquid SO/sub 2/ production, probably in conjunction with 3); 4) Capture of SO/sub 2/ from low-grade gas by scrubbing with lime; and 5) Reduction of SO/sub 2/ to produce elemental sulfur, again in conjunction with 3). A detailed SO/sub 2/ control strategy in copper, zinc, lead, and nickel processes is presented and acid-plant requirements for conversion of smelter SO/sub 2/ gases to sulfuric acid are discussed.
