Diploid yeast cells were exposed to accelerated heavy ions (Ar, Kr, Xe, Pb, U) with specific energies of 1.4 and 4.8 MeV/u, to x rays, and to ..cap alpha.. particles. Experiments were performed with dried cells on membrane filters in vacuo. From the survival curves inactivation cross sections were determined. They increase with LET/sub infinity/ (linear energy transfer) up to the maximum LET/sub infinity/ studied, 14,000 keV/..mu..m.
