Inelastic pion diffraction and a pion induced reaction at 11. 46 GeV/c

Data from a triggered hybrid bubble chamber experiment studying the reaction ..pi../sup +/p..--> pi../sup +/pK/sup +/K/sup -/ at an incident pion momentum of 11.46 GeV/c are presented. The total cross section for the reaction is determined to be 87.2 +/- 6.4 ..mu..b. Individual physical channels are identified and their total and differential cross sections determined by means of a prism plotting analysis. Inelastic pion diffractive dissociation is studied by means of a partial wave analysis of a subset of the data which was selected for its peripherality. The cross section for this diffractive channel is found to be 19.4 +/- 1.8 ..mu..b. Natural parity exchange is shown to dominate the reaction giving rise solely to unnatural parity K/sup +/..pi../sup +/K/sup -/ waves. No unambiguous evidence for resonant states is found and the majority of contributing waves can be accounted for by kinematical mechanisms. The relative phase measurements and intensities of the competing states are presented.
