Boron control in power plant reclaimed water for potable reuse

A U.S. power plant has considered using the product water from its brine evaporator in their potable system since it complies with all drinking-water standards. However, the carryover of boron from ash-pond effluent in the product water has caused some concerns. A limit fo 0.3 mg/liter of boron in potable water was recommended from a literature review. Eight potential boron-removal processes were evaluated and compared. Strong-base anion exchange appears to be the best process for the boron removal. For a 100-gal/min (23-m/sup 3//h) potable-water system, the treatment product cost was estimated to be $0.96 per 1000 gallons. This cost is very competitive with purchasing water from municipalities, even in areas where water is abundant. It would be economically attractive in an arid region where good quality water is scarce.
