Grid alloy trends

Journal Article · · Battery Man; (United States)

The developments in battery grid alloys are described according to these design objectives: sufficient cranking power, adequate reserve capacity, low water loss, extended service life, reasonable cost, and increased manufacturing efficiency. SLI battery grids are lead alloyed with either antimony or calcium. Lead-calcium alloys dominate usage in original and replacement equipment. This is due to the economic advantage of reduced/eliminated tin contents and the favorable effects of aluminum which acts as a composition stabilizer.
