Effects of federal deficits on the energy industries
Deficit reduction will be both painful and difficult to achieve, and could affect the energy sector in a number of ways. At present the deficit is financed principally by inflows of foreign capital, which have increased the value of the dollar and put US industries at a competitive disadvantage relative to foreign industries. Over the long term, the national debt could become so large as to tempt the government into reducing the real value of the debt by increased inflation. To avoid these difficulties, spending cuts and/or tax increases must reduce the deficits. The author reviews proposed deficit reduction measures directly affecting energy producers and concludes that, from the perspective of the energy sector, a greater emphasis on spending cuts is desirable. 4 figures, 5 tables.
