Coal Slurry Pipeline Bill has been killed in the U. S. House of Representatives

The Coal Slurry Pipeline Bill has been killed in the U.S. House of Representatives by a 214-to-161 margin, owing to strong lobbying efforts by environmentalists and railroad representatives. The bill would have removed obstacles to the construction of coal slurry pipelines. The bill may be introduced again in 1979, but will stand little chance of passage considering the large margin of defeat. Coal slurry pipeline planners must now seek permission from each landowner along proposed routes.
