The pyrolysis of dihydric phenols

Journal Article · · Solid Fuel Chem. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)

The homogeneous pyrolysis of dihydric phenols has been investigated in the temperature range of 1023-1123 K at contact times of 1.5-4.5 sec. The yields of liquid products, pyrocarbon, ''crude benzene,'' and pyrogas, the group composition of the tars, and the component compositions of their phenolic and hydrocarbon fractions and also that of the pyrogas have been determined. A functional analysis has been made of the asphaltenes and neutral oxygen-containing compounds. Kinetic equations have been obtained for the overall cracking process and also for the formation of individual groups of tars and components of the gas. Mechanisms for the formation of CO and CO/sub 2/ have been proposed and confirmed by calculations.
