Pipelines move nearly half of U. S. oil

According to an Association of Oil Pipelines report, pipelines maintained their 48% share of the U.S. crude and products transportation market during 1976. Of the 1.9 billion tons of crude and products carried in 1976, pipelines moved 934 million tons; water transportation moved 425 million, approx.22Vertical Bar3<; motor carriers, 559 million, 29%; and railroads, 26 million, 1%. Crude shipments declined from 611 million tons in 1975 to 608 million in 1976. Pipelines increased their share of crude shipments in 1976 to 75%. Total pipeline crude shipments in 1976 were 458 million tons, compared with 454 million in 1975. Petroleum products shipments increased in 1976 to 1.3 billion tons, compared with 1.2 billion in 1975; pipelines carried 475 million tons, 35%, compared with 425 million, 34%, in 1975. Total U.S. crude and product shipments, including means of transport and per cent of total, are tabulated by year for 1970-76.
