Home Oil Co. Ltd. and its partners, Murphy Oil Co. Ltd. and North Canadian Oils Ltd., have begun drilling the first of two 3000 ft stratigraphic tests for a proposed strategic storage/oil transshipment project on Cape Breton Island. The test holes will define the extent and stratigraphy of a salt deposit in the McIntire Lake region on the Strait of Canso, and are expected to confirm that the salt zone could be leached for storage of 100 million bbl of oil. The Home group originally planned to develop the underground storage project for oil or LPG transshipments, but the site has been chosen for the U.S. strategic-storage project. According to the Home group, the Nova Scotia project could provide strategic storage for the New England states and Canada and could also function as a transshipment terminal for the entire East Coast. Home and partners, which hold Nova Scotia storage exploration permits covering 100 sq mi, are negotiating for use of Gulf Oil Canada Ltd.'s deep water terminal at Wright Point on the Strait of Canso.
