Title: Evolving national air pollution problem

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5099657

This article was presented at the annual meeting and seminar on National Affairs, Engineers Joint Council. Discussed were the changes in the nation's attitudes toward the problem of air pollution and in the national policies being evolved in response to these changes. Historical aspects of air pollution programs were presented. The Clean Air Act Amendments and the proposed initial motor vehicle exhaust standards which apply to new 1968 model cars were indicators of some new federal concerns on standards of emissions of hydrocarbons and other pollutants. All levels of government will be needed to effectively manage the sulfur pollution problem. It was concluded that engineers must accept a responsibility for all consequences of their activities and participate appropriately in the development and implementation of public and private policies in the broad public interest. The engineering community must make a critical look at what it should be doing in the air pollution field. Control policies and opportunities must be measured against the long-term public interest, which is bound to include the interests of industry, commerce, and all other segments of society. These steps will protect the public health and welfare from air pollution and be a benefit to all.
