This article presents a historical perspective of fireside corrosion problems in Western Europe and US refuse-fired boilers. Serious corrosion appeared when refuse incinerators evolved from simple refractory-lined furnaces to radiant furnace waterwall designs. Minimization of these problems by such methods as design and operating condition, boiler tube alloy, and fuel modification are reviewed.
