Sweden produces 6 million tonnes of straw annually, which in energy terms, is equivalent to 7% of Sweden's total oil requirements, but only half of this material could conceivably be burned. The Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences has published a report entitled ''Straw as a raw material in the forest industry'' which deals with several aspects of straw utilization, in particular the pulping of straw and the use of straw as a fuel. This article deals with the use of straw as a source of energy and covers such topics as the cost of straw, transport, combustion properties, design of boilers for straw burning and environmental impacts.
