This article contains summaries based on papers presented at the 1980 Tappi Annual Meeting held in February in Atlanta. Two papers dealing with energy costs are ''planning energy use'' and ''energy savings through advanced boiler control''. The use of forest residues as fuel has been gaining in importance and three papers deal with this topic - ''wood gasification: key to energy self-sufficiency'', ''chemicals and fuel from forest residues'', and ''increasing pulp yield with bark utilization''. Machinery to collect forest material is described in two papers - ''a biomass harvester'' and ''whole-tree chips: state of the art''. Forest management, high yield eucalypt forests and advances in covered-roll-technology are also topics at the meeting.
