Pion production and nuclear-fireball characteristics in heavy-ion collisions at 0. 1--1 GeV/nucleon

The statistical model taking into account the finiteness of the number of particles in the statistical ensemble is used to analyze the proton and {pi}-meson spectra in heavy-ion collisions at 0.1--1 GeV/nucleon. The role of the {Delta} resonance in the formation of the pion spectrum, the reasons for the deviation of the pion spectra from the Maxwell shape, and the reasons for the differences between the slope parameters of the pion and proton spectra are discussed. It is shown that the dependence of the slope parameters of the pion and proton spectra on the mass of the colliding nuclei is explained by finite-size effects of the statistical ensemble. The temperature of the nuclear fireball is obtained, and the degree of thermalization of nuclear matter at the freezing density is estimated. It is shown that the assumption that free decay of the {Delta} isobar dominates in the formation of the pion spectrum is inconsistent with the observed shape of the {pi}-meson energy distribution.
