Title: The layered manganocuprate Eu{sub 3}Ba{sub 2}Mn{sub 2}Cu{sub 2}O{sub 12}: An intergrowth between the {open_quotes}123{close_quotes} and {open_quotes}0201{close_quotes} structures

Journal Article · · Journal of Solid State Chemistry

A manganocuprate Eu{sub 3}Ba{sub 2}Mn{sub 2}Cu{sub 2}O{sub 12} with a {open_quotes}0234{close_quotes} layered structure has been synthesized for the first time. This new phase crystallizes in the space group I4/mmm (a = 3.8826(1) {Angstrom}, c = 35.266(1) {Angstrom}). Its study by HREM and powder XRD shows that its structure consists of an intergrowth of single rock-salt layers with quadruple oxygen deficient perovskite layers. This structure can also be described as an intergrowth of K{sub 2}NiF{sub 4}-type layers, Eu{sub 2}MnO{sub 4}, with oxidized {open_quotes}123{close_quotes} layers EuBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 2}MnO{sub 8}. The semi-conducting properties and paramagnetic behavior of this phase at temperatures above 130 K suggest a mixed valence of manganese according to the formula Eu{sub 3}{sup III}Ba{sub 2}Mn{sup III}Mn{sup IV}Cu{sub 2}{sup II}O{sub 12}. An original feature of this compound deals with the existence of two magnetic orderings at 100 and 15 K respectively.
