Eu{sub 2.5}Ba{sub 2.5}Co{sub 2}O{sub 12}, an intergrowth of the {open_quotes}112{close_quotes} and {open_quotes}123{close_quotes} structures

Journal Article · · Journal of Solid State Chemistry
A regular intergrowth of the 112 and 123 structures has been synthesized for the first time. The new phase Eu{sub 2.5}Ba{sub 2.5}Co{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 12} crystallizes in the space group P4/mmm with a = 3.8935(2) {angstrom} and c = 19.085(2) {angstrom}. Its XRPD and HREM study demonstrates that it corresponds to the first (n = n{prime} = 1) member of the intergrowth series [LnBa(Co,Cu){sub 2}O{sub 5}]{sub n} [LnBa{sub 2}(Co,Cu){sub 3}O{sub 7}]{sub n{prime}}. The observation of several intergrowth defects suggests that it should be possible to synthesize other members of the series. The EDX analysis and the HREM observations show a complex cationic distribution involving local ordering of cobalt and copper that may mainly occur on the intermediate (Cu,Co) sites, i.e., between the pyramidal layers.
