Differences between the forming processes of RBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-x}(R = Y, Yb) phases and preparation of the single-phase Yb-123 superconductor

The formation of YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-x} (Yb-123) and YbBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-x} (Yb-123) phases, the synthesis of single-phase Yb-123, and the lowest temperature for obtaining the single-phase Y-123 superconductor have been studied by X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, and superconductivity measurements. The results indicate that the Y-123 phase is formed from the principal chemical reaction Y{sub 2}O{sub 3} + 4BaCO{sub 3} + 6CuO + (1 - 2x)/2O{sub 2} {r_arrow} 2YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-x} + 4CO{sub 2}{up_arrow}. The reactions for forming Yb-123 phase are Yb{sub 2}O{sub 3} + BaCO{sub 3} + CuO {r_arrow} Yb{sub 2}BaCuO{sub 5} + CO{sub 2} {up_arrow} BaCO{sub 3} + CuO {r_arrow} BaCuO{sub 2} + CO{sub 2} {up_arrow} Yb{sub 2}BaCuO{sub 5} + 3BaCuO{sub 2} + 2CuO + (1 - 2x)/2O{sub 2} {r_arrow} 2YbBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-x}. In our experiments, the lowest temperature for obtaining the near-single-phase Y-123 bulk superconductor is 780{degrees}C; a simple procedure for synthesis of the single-phase Yb-123 superconductor is described.
