When correctly applied draglines are reported to give the lowest cost/m/sup 3/ of overburden removal. The advantages and disadvantages of using draglines in coal mining operations are presented. Overburden is removed in lifts by a dragline when benching of highwalls is required for safety in deep overburden areas. Three multiple lift methods are reviewed. They are: the one pass split bench, two pass spilt bench, and extended benchmethods. Draglines are often the best choice in surface mining.
