Application of static VAR generators (compensators) to transmission systems

A brief discussion of some of the more important considerations in the application of Static Var Generators (SVGs) to transmission systems is presented. Arrangements of SVGs appropriate to use in transmission systems, and their interaction, are covered to give some insight into what should be considered for specific systems. Two general system configurations are foreseen as potential candidates for future SVG applications: where additional EHV transmission is being delayed or restricted, and an SVG application can reduce risk of system instability; and where the economies of very large and long transmission systems makes attractive the use of a number of large SVGs instead of the additional transmission lines. The SVG combining thyristor-switched capacitors with controlled-current reactors is described as a useful type for such application. 17 refs.
