USA coal export mission to Europe, May 19-28, 1982

A recent trade mission to Europe was satisfied that the US case for becoming a long-term coal supplier was persuasive. The European energy officials, coal buyers, and consumers turned out to meetings in larger numbers and were more receptive than was expected. Participants felt the joint effort was more efficient and more effective than individual contacts. Although their mission was to present the US as a reliable long-term supplier, European concerns focused more on its ability to make large deliveries at competitive prices. No coal sales contracts were completed, but participants expect their contacts to open up new opportunities. A list of participants identifies them as coal producers, coal-related industries, trade associations, members of Congress, and government officials. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Trade Development William H. Morris, Jr. was the mission leader. (DCK)
