After a delay of several weeks, EPA has officially released its new policy on environmental self-audits, and industry says it does not go far enough. The policy provides for substantially reduced penalties for companies that voluntarily find, report, and fix environmental problems at their plants. EPA administrator Carol Browner says the policy is designed {open_quotes}to reward environmentally responsible actions, without unduly limiting vigorous enforcement of our environmental laws or the public`s right to know. It should go a long way toward increasing compliance.{close_quotes}
