Ripening of inter- and intragranular ZrO/sub 2/ particles in ZrO/sub 2/-toughened Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/

Ripening of intergranular and intergranular ZrO/sub 2/ particles in ZrO/sub 2/-toughened Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ (ZTA) was studied at 1600/sup 0/C. The increase in average ZrO/sub 2/ particle size and average Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ grain size, as well as the change in ZrO/sub 2/ particle-size distributions, are given and analyzed in terms of classical Ostwald ripening theory, on the one hand, and coalescence due to particle drag, on the other.
