Research on transformation toughened ZrO/sub 2/-containing ceramics is underway. We are concentrating on the study of Ostwald ripening in ZrO/sub 2/-toughened Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ (ZTA), plastic deformation of stabilized ZrO/sub 2/ single crystals, and the stress-induced tetragonal ..-->.. monoclinic martensitic transformation in Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/-containing tetragonal ZrO/sub 2/ polycrystals.
