Manalapan Mining officials chose to introduce diesel haulage to their Harlan coal field when presented with the problem of determining how to mine a 12 foot seam. This article presents the statistics that show that their choice proved wise. Production increases of 35% to 40% on the two high coal sections resulted. Production averaged 1,500 tons per shift, an increase of 40,000 tons per month. Geological variations in the Harlan coal seam contributed greatly to Manalapan's use of diesel haulage equipment.
