This paper reports that the economy of the Netherlands is very much influenced by the fact that the country lies at the mouth of three great West European rivers: Rijn, Maas, and Schelde. Trade and shipping, and the allied industries, are the major pillars of the countries economy. In addition, the Netherlands is an important through route for fossil fuels, especially oil and coal, with the port of Rotterdam housing a number of large refineries. Oil is drilled for on a modest scale in the Netherlands and on an even bigger scale in the North Sea. A number of large gas fields are present, making the Netherlands one of the most important exporters of natural gas in Europe. The quality of the gasses of the various gasfields is high, consisting almost entirely of C{sub x}H{sub y} products and characterized by an absence of sulphur. The Netherlands has anticipated the use of gas in homes; the vast majority of homes are heated using natural gas. In addition, gas is used for industrial purposes, being an ideal fuel for heating and power installations. Three Dutch research institutes (TNO road transport, Gasunie, and VEG gas institut) have contributed greatly to the development of clean Otto motors and gas turbines. The biggest European laboratory for the testing and approval of electrical materials (KEMA) is situated in the Netherlands.
