Size of the oil industry in Mexico's economy

Journal Article · · J. Energy Dev.; (United States)

Speaking before the Americas Society in New York on July 26, 1984, Petroleos Mexicanos president Beteta emphasized the importance of PEMEX, not only to Mexico, but to the free world. PEMEX is the largest corporation in the developing world; further, PEMEX's production of crude and natural gas liquids was second in volume only to one multinational oil company. PEMEX, which alone accounts for almost a third of public investments, contributes 36% of the governments fiscal revenues in Mexico. While it was true that oil and gas exports accounted for 75% of Mexico's total merchandize exports, the value added by the oil industry, including petrochemicals, represented close to 9% of gross domestic product, at current prices. These figures are discussed within the perspective of figures revealed in the past regarding the oil industry in Mexico. 18 references, 11 tables.
