Evidence for a nonrotational interpretation of < 0/sup +/vertical-barvertical-bar M(E4) vertical-barvertical-bar4/sup +/ > in /sup 180/Hf. [Angular distributions from /sup 180/(. cap alpha. ,. cap alpha. ') at 21 and 24 MeV]

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)
Angular distributions for the reaction /sup 180/Hf(..cap alpha..,..cap alpha..') were measured for laboratory ..cap alpha..-particle energies of 21 and 24 MeV. Data were obtained for 0/sup +/, 2/sup +/, 4/sup +/, and 6/sup +/ members of the ground-state rotational band. Data for the 4/sup +/ state show unambiguously that the reduced matrix element of M(E4) between O/sup +/ and 4/sup +/ states is large and negative. Data for the 6/sup +/ state are not well-fitted by rotational-model coupled-channels calculations. These results may indicate that the interpretation of the E4 matrix element as arising from a static ..beta../sub 4/ deformation in the framework of the simple rotational model is incorrect.
