This volume examines the use of economic incentives in programs aimed at environmental protection. The general case for such incentives is stated, three in-depth case studies are presented, and the attitudes of political decision makers toward the use of such incentives are surveyed and analyzed. Among the conclusions that emerge are the importance of adapting the economic approach carefully to the fact and problems of individual cases and the deep antipathy of many decision makers toward that basic approach. Separate abstracts were prepared for chapters one and fourteen and for Case Study 4 (chapters 10-13) for the Energy Data Base (EDB) and Energy Abstracts for Policy Analysis (EAPA).
