The idea of a digital control system for the University of Texas TRIGA (UT-TRIGA) reactor began as part of a project to move the research reactor. Relocation of the reactor from the campus to the Balcones Research Center presented an opportunity to replace the aging control system with up-to-date equipment. General Atomics designed, developed, and tested the new digital control system as a standard system as a standard system to upgrade the present generation of research reactor instrumentation systems. The application of digital instrument and control systems on a research reactor provides a number of advantages to the operator. Among these are logging of parameters, automatic tests of key circuits and measurements channels, human factor operator interface, and rapid detection of different types of faults. A common factor of all these advantages is that the operator can devote more time to the operation of the reactor and its experiments and less time to the mechanics of maintenance and verifying that the system is in an operable condition.
