This dissertation has 3 goals: (1) to study the relationship between short-term memory span (capacity) and memory scanning rate (the rate at which the contents of short-term memory can be searched); (2) to evaluate the validity, reliability, and precision of the memory scanning rate as a test of short-term memory functioning; and (3) to determine the effects of chronic industrial exposure to elemental mercury on short-term memory.
