Development of efficient and economical processes for generating SNG from plant materials has increased in recent years. Presently, there is considerable optimism that this field is going to rapidly expand due to advances in the understanding of the microbiology and biochemistry of anaerobic digestion and innovative developments in the design of gasification reactors. Generally, two approaches are used for converting biomass to methane: thermal gasification and anaerobic digestion. This paper is concerned with the anaerobic conversion of biomass into natural gas substitute. The discussion is presented under headings--biomass gasification; anaerobic digestion; digester design; current research. (Refs. 16).
