A review covers microbiology and mechanisms; soil anaerobiosis; denitrification in soil-water systems; wastewater denitrification; process developments, e.g., to produce relatively pure methane by subjecting conventional digesters to pressures of 2 to 5 atm gage; process applications for industrial wastes, e.g., for the fermentation of brewery wastes to produce methane and the conversion of coal gasification products to methane; process applications for agricultural wastes, e.g., for the anaerobic digestion of chicken litter and manure for methane and fertilizer production; process applications for refuse, e.g., the BIOGAS process to maximize SNG recovery from the anaerobic digestion of municipal solid waste and sludge; and process applications for energy from biomass, e.g., studies on a proposed process for producing SNG by anaerobic digestion of deciduous hardwood which showed that with optimization of the various unit processes at a plant with 16 pretreatment-digestion trains, 2.61 million cu m/day of SNG could be produced at a cost of $132/million cu m. 125 references.
